The Baneh Special Economic Zone is envisioned as a strategic development initiative aimed at strengthening the commercial and industrial infrastructure of Kurdistan Province while activating the economic potential of its border geography. Located in western Iran and sharing a boundary with Iraq, Kurdistan Province occupies a significant position in cross border trade networks. Within this context, the city of Baneh has long functioned as one of the region’s primary gateways for commercial exchange. The establishment of the special economic zone seeks to organize and formalize these economic interactions while creating conditions conducive to investment, production, and export oriented activities.
The zone is situated approximately fifteen kilometers from the city of Baneh, along the western corridor of the Baneh - Bouein route. Its location places it within a broader network of regional mobility that connects border crossings, urban centers, and trade corridors. Strengthening transportation infrastructure such as improving surrounding highways and regional access routes, plays a central role in enhancing the operational capacity of the zone. Through these infrastructural improvements, the area is positioned to function as an important logistical node within the wider system of regional economic exchange.
Spatially, the organization of the complex draws upon the accumulated experience of industrial town development in Iran while adapting to the specific operational requirements of special economic zones. The entrance sequence forms the representative face of the development, where administrative buildings, conference facilities, and tourism related services such as hotels are positioned within the visual corridor of the main gateway. Together with landscaped open spaces and a distinctive entrance structure, these elements establish a recognizable identity for the zone and contribute to its role as a new economic landmark for Baneh.
Beyond the entrance zone, commercial services and healthcare facilities are arranged near the central activity core, ensuring accessibility and supporting the daily functioning of the area. Supporting transport services including the terminal and taxi facilities, are placed within secondary layers of the site, maintaining convenient access while minimizing visual disruption. The majority of the land is dedicated to industrial units and warehouse facilities, organized according to operational and environmental regulations.
Green spaces are distributed throughout the site as environmental buffers and transitional layers between industrial areas and the central service zones. Rather than forming a single concentrated park, these landscaped strips operate as spatial mediators that improve environmental quality while reinforcing the functional structure of the development. In this way, the Baneh Special Economic Zone is conceived not only as a platform for industrial production and trade, but also as a structured spatial framework supporting sustainable economic growth and strengthening Baneh’s role within regional and cross border economic networks.
