Raran Village, located within the Jey Rural District in the Central District of Isfahan County, lies along the eastern edge of Isfahan in close relationship with Khorasgan. Bordered by agricultural lands and orchards to the north and south and by the urban territories of Khorasgan to the east, the village occupies a transitional setting between a historic rural settlement and the expanding urban sphere of Isfahan. Its historical identity is closely tied to its landmark minaret, dating back to the Timurid period, around which the village’s earliest core took shape. The old fabric, defined by narrow organic alleys and buildings constructed with traditional masonry materials, reflects a gradual pattern of settlement rooted in the spatial and functional needs of rural life. Over time, Raran expanded primarily along an east–west axis, while more recent growth along its western edge has adopted patterns more closely associated with urban development.
Despite the historical and cultural value of its older fabric, Raran faces a range of physical and infrastructural challenges. The historic core is marked by deteriorating buildings, limited-service provision, narrow access routes, and the absence of a proper wastewater system. At the same time, the village’s capacity for outward expansion is constrained by the agricultural lands surrounding it and by the presence of a watercourse along its eastern edge. In recent years, drought, declining agricultural productivity, and reduced employment opportunities have contributed to outward migration. Yet the village’s proximity to Isfahan and comparatively low land values have also encouraged new patterns of population growth and peripheral settlement. Together, these conditions underscore the need for a more coordinated approach to spatial organization, infrastructure improvement, and service provision.
The proposed development framework for Raran is centered on the revitalization of its historic core and the enhancement of its public realm. Priority is given to the rehabilitation of the old fabric, the landscape organization of the area surrounding the historic minaret, and the preservation of the village’s spring route, mature trees, and architecturally valuable structures. Future residential and service-related growth is directed first toward vacant and underused land within the existing fabric, limiting unnecessary encroachment on surrounding agricultural land. The plan also provides for the development and organization of educational, cultural, sports, healthcare, and agricultural support facilities, alongside the improvement of circulation networks and surface water management systems. Through this approach, the project seeks to preserve Raran’s historical identity while guiding its future growth in a manner aligned with its environmental setting, spatial structure, and evolving community needs.
