Kuhpayeh is one of Iran’s historic cities, with origins dating back at least to the Safavid period. The presence of significant historical landmarks, architectural remains, and a rich cultural and religious identity reflects the city’s deep historical roots and enduring social character. Together with the city’s internal green spaces and surrounding landscape, these heritage assets constitute Kuhpayeh’s most valuable cultural and tourism resources.
The city is located 65 kilometers east of Isfahan, along the Yazd–Bandar-e-Abbas transit corridor. As the administrative and service center of Kuhpayeh district, it plays a key role in providing regional services. Its hot, dry climate and limited water resources have shaped an economy primarily based on industry and services, with urban development largely linear along the Isfahan–Naein Road. The historic areas, concentrated in the central and southern parts of the city, feature a valuable, organically developed structure, while most buildings throughout the city are low-rise.
The Detailed Urban Development Plan of Kuhpayeh City has been prepared based on a comprehensive understanding of its geography, history, society, economy, environment, and urban structure. The plan involved a thorough analysis of current conditions, an assessment of potentials and limitations, and the identification of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Based on these insights, the scope of decisions and the main strategies for intervention were established.
Following this analysis, the plan proposes alternatives for reorganizing land use, revising the transportation network, guiding future urban development, and prioritizing key projects. The reconstruction of Kuhpayeh Historical Bazaar, guided by Cultural Heritage regulations, serves as the focal point for revitalizing the old city, enhancing its historic identity, and shaping commercial, cultural, and religious hubs. Finally, the plan establishes a clear roadmap for the city’s development over the next 10–20 years.
