The Khorramshahr Commercial-Office Complex has been defined with the aim of strengthening service, commercial, and urban support infrastructures, considering the city’s position as a key economic hub near the maritime trade border. The specific climate of Khorramshahr—characterized by extreme heat, high humidity, and the impact of dust storms—restricts the use of open spaces for much of the year. Consequently, the project emphasizes the creation of an introverted, safe, and controlled public space as a climate-responsive solution to the city’s environmental challenges.
The architectural concept is inspired by the movement of waves and the continuity of the sea. This formal approach is not merely expressive but also serves as a climatic strategy; the curvature of the building’s shell, particularly on the southern facade, creates shading surfaces. Combined with the selection of materials appropriate for heat transfer conditions, this design reduces the building’s thermal load and enhances the quality of the indoor environment, balancing architectural expression with environmental requirements.
The functional organization of the complex is based on adapting to surrounding needs and enhancing urban efficiency. Due to the proximity of an educational-cultural center lacking parking, a multi-story parking lot with a 600-car capacity has been integrated into the project. This serves both the complex and the infrastructure deficit of neighboring sites. Furthermore, since shopping is a primary leisure activity in Khorramshahr, commercial functions and a hypermarket are placed on the lower levels to act as the main anchors for attracting citizens and activating the complex.
To promote vertical circulation and internal dynamism, the ground and first floors are dedicated to retail units, while the hypermarket is located on the second floor. This strategic placement increases the functional and economic value of the commercial units along the users’ path. The multi-story parking begins from the third floor upward, ensuring that the lower levels—which have the most direct connection to the public urban realm—are reserved for active and high-traffic functions.
Regarding accessibility, the parking ramp is designed for optimal land use, transitioning from a straight path on the ground floor to a circular ramp on a cantilever. Pedestrian access is enhanced via a bridge that ensures safety and directs visitors into the climate-controlled interior during harsh weather. Additionally, the office section features an independent lobby for improved comfort. Finally, a semi-open rooftop restaurant serves as a complementary space, allowing users to enjoy the outdoors during temperate seasons and summer nights, thereby reducing energy dependence on fully enclosed spaces.
